Professor Cheriet boasts an illustrious academic career, having published over 500 technical papers in esteemed international journals and conferences. His expertise is frequently sought after, as evidenced by more than 70 invited talks delivered globally. He is the author of the highly acclaimed textbook, Character Recognition Systems: A Textbook for Students and Practitioners, and has edited seven books, contributed sixteen book chapters, developed two IEEE standards (with IEEE 1922.2 published and IEEE 1922.1 in progress), and holds seven patents.
In addition to his prolific research output, Professor Cheriet is deeply committed to the academic community. He serves in editorial roles for several technical journals and plays a pivotal role in organizing and participating in numerous conferences. Throughout his distinguished career, he has supervised 38 postdoctoral fellows and graduated 54 PhD candidates, 68 master’s students, and 26 undergraduates, thereby fostering the next generation of innovators and scholars.
Prof. Cheriet is also recognized for his activities in technical journal editorial writing, organizing and taking part in many conferences. He has contributed to the training of 38 PDF 38, 54 PhD, 68 Master’s, and 26 Undergraduates. Dr. Cheriet was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in light of his significant contributions to knowledge improvement in computational intelligence and mathematical modeling for image processing, created by MITCAS to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty’s accession to the throne. He holds NSERC Canada Research Chair Tier 1 in Sustainable Smart echo-Cloud.

His contributions have significantly impacted fields such as computational intelligence, mathematical modeling for image processing, green ICT, cloud computing, and big data analytics.
He has been honored with the prestigious NSERC Canada Research Chair Tier 1 in Sustainable Smart Echo-Cloud, recognizing his leadership in this cutting-edge area. In 2012, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from MITCAS for his substantial contributions to knowledge enhancement in computational intelligence and mathematical modeling. The following year, in 2013, he was awarded the ÉTS Research Excellence Prize for his exceptional work in green ICT, cloud computing, and big data analytics. In 2016, he received the IEEE J.M. Ham Outstanding Engineering Educator Award.
A senior member of IEEE, Professor Cheriet is the founder and former Chair of the IEEE Montreal Chapter of Computational Intelligent Systems (CIS). He currently serves as a Steering Committee Member of the IEEE Sustainable ICT Initiative and chairs the ICT Emissions Working Group, underscoring his commitment to sustainable technological advancements.
