1. DESCRIPTION OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS

1.1 Development of prediction methods for the analysis of gas-solid particle flows.

The originality of the proposed method is its capacity of analyzing gas-solid particle flows over a wide range of solid-phase concentration. This capacity of the method is extremely important for the analysis of particle separators where both regions of low and high concentration of the solid phase are present. Furthermore, the proposed method is applicable for the analysis of flows in complex geometry. This work has been the subject of two articles in refereed journals (see articles 2 and 10, Section 2).

1.2 Development of prediction methods for the location of the laminar/turbulent transition.

This prediction method is based on the classical linear stability theory coupled to the n factor method. However, an original hybrid formulation has been proposed. This new method, based on both the temporal and spatial formulations, necessitates less computing resources than the classical formulations. Furthermore, the software version of this method has the capability of analyzing complex wing geometry (not only conical wings). This software is currently used by Canadair. This work has been the subject of three refereed journal articles (see articles 4, 8 and 9, Section 2).

1.3 Development of prediction methods for the simulation of the flow around a wind turbine.

This method is based on the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations where the effects of the wind turbine is represented in the form of external forces. This work is a first step toward the development of methods for the simulations of wind park flows. The hypothesis of axisymmetric flows has been invoked in order to use a minimum of computing resources. Consequently, it has been efficiently demonstrated that the level of accuracy of the results produced by the proposed method are sufficient for the analysis of wind park performances. This work has been the subject of refereed journal and conference articles (see articles 6 and 34, Section 2)

1.4 Critical study on the use of laminar blades in wind turbine applications.

It has been demonstrated that conventional blades are more efficient than laminar blades at high wind speeds. This fact is related to lower value of the stall angle of attack of laminar blades with respect to conventional blades. It has been also demonstrated that the low level of drag attributed to laminar blades is only beneficial at very low wind speeds, so that this characteristic should not be considered as the main reason for using laminar airfoils. This study has been the subject of two refereed journal articles (see articles 3 and 5, Section 2).

1.5 Development of a numerical method for the simulation of axisymmetric flows.

This general method has been developed for the analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer in complex geometry. This method has been used for the analysis of various applications, such as pipe flows, flows in a coronary artery, natural convection in a cylindrical enclosure, split-flow inertial separators, and the dynamics of inclusions in molten aluminum. This last application was the subject of a consulting contract with Alcan International. The formulation and validation of this method has been presented in a refereed journal article (see article 11, Section 2).
